The Fan an 18th Century Italian Comedia del Arte piece reimagined during a time with little to no live theatre in the U.S. The goal of this production was to bring a moment of relief to the audience. Pulling visual inspiration from this Italian comedy style we incorporated the facial elements of the Comedia del Arte masks and the faces masks used to protect the actors from the spread of Covid -19. The team wanted this piece to have an eclectic aesthetic to match the outlandish comedy within the piece.
My role in the Process
The costume design process for this show was a combination of design and technical work as part of a three-person costume team. This was a project that encompassed all of the costume processes from the first design meeting to purchasing, altering, and building the show. Working and colaborating with professionals attempting to make theatre happen during 2020 was an inspiring experience. Thus production created a positive reaction from the community during a stressful time is what The Fan wanted the audience to leave feeling.
